CHAPTER SIXTEEN

SCATH

Apryl ate her brownie in silence, and I knew the dessert wasn’t going to fix her disappointment. I was torn between wanting to find her glasses at Whiteman and staying with her. Staying won since she still questioned her place with me, and I didn’t want her asking any of my brothers if she could live with them.

“Should we watch another movie and then make the fight meatballs?” I asked.

She gave me a soft smile.

“Sure. That sounds like a good idea.”

The movie was one of my favorites, but I could tell from Apryl’s expression that she wasn’t really listening to it. Instead of leaning against me like the day before, she sat straight with her back against the couch and her unfocused gaze aimed at the wall rather than the TV.

However, she seemed a little better when we started dinner after the movie ended. She talked about her grandma and told me about the family she had. Before the earthquakes, she had lived by herself in an apartment, away from her family. So she didn’t know if any of them were still alive. She only knew that they weren’t at Whiteman.

The sadness in her voice said she already thought they were gone. I gave her another brownie to help her feel better, but it worked as well as the last one.

Her smile returned when I tried rolling the first ball of meat. My large hands created misshapen lumps. Her smaller ones skillfully palmed the meat, coaxing it into a perfect sphere with a nudge of her palm here and a caress of her fingers there.

My balls tingled, and my cock ached by the time she finished. I placed dinner in the oven and excused myself to use the bathroom. Once again, I imagined it was her hands on me and released swiftly.

When I returned to the living room, I found Apryl peering at the books beside the television.

“This is a nice collection,” she said. “It looks like all romance.”

“Do you want to read?” I asked, already imagining the possibilities.

She shook her head and set the book down again.

“I’d probably give myself a headache in a few minutes. Too much eye strain without my glasses.”

“Do you think they’re still there?” I asked.

“At Whiteman? Probably somewhere under the snow.” Her expression turned hopeful. “Are you thinking of looking for them?”

“Yes, but I don’t want to leave you alone.”

“I’ll be fine alone. I swear.”

I glanced at the oven and at the window. I had less than an hour of daylight left.

“I’ll go look, but only if you allow someone to stay with you.”

“I don’t need a babysitter.”

I debated how much to say as I gently clasped her arms.

“You are not dead weight. You are smart and capable. But if another breach happened, would you be able to see the difference between an infected human and a normal one?”

She glanced away from me.

“Now that you’re here, I don’t want to risk you. Even a cut or a burn would be too much. Please allow someone to stay with you while I’m gone.
